The Shared Bike Program is a gift from the Class of 2009 and Paul Lehman '86. Over 50% of the Class of 2009 gave money to help start the program, in addition to a large donation from Paul. Paul created stickers on the bikes in memory of his friends at Vassar. Paul wrote, "Tom Tsao was my roommate freshman year. He died not long after graduation and is missed every day. 'Bill with the Hat Lives' refers to Bill Widdoes, who started off as the class of '86, but I can't tell you whether or not he graduated. His nickname was Bill with the Hat and he was a dear friend of Tom's. I added it because I know somewhere Tom is watching and he will get a big kick out of the sticker."
The program is open to all members of the Vassar community. For a $10 fee, members receive a key that will unlock any pink bike. You can register at the Bike Shop in the basement of Strong House. The fees generated by the program will be used to maintain the bikes, and a student employment position has been designated for bike repair and maintenance.
The Bike Shop
Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 2:00-4:00 pm
The Bike Shop is located in the basement of Strong and can be accessed from the North side of the building. There is a ramp from the parking lot in between Lathrop and Strong down to the shop. Please bring any broken bikes, bike parts, and stray locks to the bike shop during shop hours. Please don’t fear any repercussions for bringing bikes and parts into the shop. All that matters to us is that the bikes get the care they need.
If you have any questions, want to express a concern, or know of a broken bike and can’t take it to the shop, feel free to contact us.
As always, please remember to lock the bikes!
